Matthew Souter is widely recognised a passionate educationalist and has for decades been at the forefront of British musical education. He is a staunch defender of children being provided with an appropriate, nurturing and safe environment in which they can grow and excel. The countless and extraordinary testimonials from his former Wells Cathedral School students and other notable authorities bear this out. Please see ‘Testimonials’ on this website.
“I was aware of his influence on students I taught, tutored or looked after during weekly boarding duty in Edwards House, and was aware that he was highly respected and held in great affection by them and their parents. It appeared to me that Matthew never gave up on a student and seemed to have an unlimited supply of ideas to help, and solutions to problems. I found him to be insightful, caring and full of concern for those in his care.”

“ You’ve been the nicest, most considerate and inspirational Head of Strings that we could have wished for.”

“My main memories of Matthew Souter are of the complete joy he brought to the string department, and instilled in us as musicians.”

“As I arrived at Wells to audition, Matthew was the first person I met and he instantly radiated kindness and enthusiasm. As I found over the ensuing three years, these are qualities that I regard as firm staples in his personality. Alongside these, he is imaginative, intuitive, dedicated and, of course a fantastic musician and intensely knowledgeable about the inner-workings of the classical music profession.”

“During my time at Wells, the strings department was an incredibly positive and friendly place. Matthew created a great sense of community amongst us that allowed us to support and teach each other, rather than competing and putting each other down as is often the way at specialist schools.
His infectious energy and passion for his work were evident in all areas of his position - his words would always resonate with us whether it be in tutorial, rehearsals or in a lesson, and we would always come away after seeing him feeling challenged, focussed and energised.
I have spent a great deal of time in musical education institutions - both as a student and now as an educator - and I strongly believe in having the best people in these positions to deliver high quality teaching at all levels. It is easy to recognise that Matthew’s brilliance as an educator lies not only in making the department a positive nurturing atmosphere, or his commitment to bring high calibre opportunities to the department, but most importantly in always making the wellbeing and development of students a priority. Having come to the school severely behind in my technical abilities, it was Matthew who encouraged and taught me how to better myself every week when many other teachers hadn’t thought I was capable. One year later, I was granted a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and nearly ten years on I am a working professional cellist - I have a BMus and MMus from one of the best conservatoires in the world, I have won several awards for my playing, and I now perform regularly as a soloist, chamber musician and with professional orchestras. There is no way I would have made it to where I am today without the words, encouragement and artistry that Matthew bestowed on me in my time at Wells, and I am only one of many who were lucky enough to have him as our head of strings.”
